As a Sunseeker guest, James and friends attended the annual DEBRA Shooting Challenge clay pigeon event at The Royal Berkshire Shooting School last year. James was nominated within the Sunseeker table to run the London Marathon upon winning the specific auction prize. A nervous and slightly reluctant James allowed the bidding to continue furiously amongst the table, resulting in a great sum of money being raised for the London Marathon place to be taken by James in support of DEBRA.
During his fundraising attempt for DEBRA, James wanted to be accountable for his own personal achievement. He embarked on a 9-month training programme with the help of Paul Mortimer of PK Bodyworks, a soft tissue and sports massage therapist, and great friend Diana Griffin of the Halebourne Group. James commented; “Only through training for this London Marathon I have realised that running for such a long distance really is ‘mind over matter’, I have been amazed by the progress to which I have reached in my fitness ability and would recommend anyone to be spurred on just like me to see what they are able to achieve.”
James continues; “The training has all been part of the fun! I have enjoyed taking part in a few half marathons including the Royal Parks Half Marathon back in October with Sunseeker London’s Laura Harrison, and have enjoyed further charity endeavours throughout the year including a trek to Petra for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust charity.”
James is delighted to announce he has raised a significant £4,110 for DEBRA in the last few months and thanks everyone involved in his ‘once in a lifetime’ marathon challenge. His recent fundraising efforts can be monitored here – donations can still be pledged for James’ London Marathon effort retrospectively.
DEBRA is a national charity specifically helping people affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (“EB”). EB is a group of currently incurable genetic skin conditions which cause the skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. In its most severe forms EB is fatal and even in its least severe forms it can still cause lifelong disability and pain. DEBRA funds pioneering research to find effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for EB. It also provides care and support to individuals and families living with EB.
